Chem Chem Safari lodge : Chem Chem Lodge lies east of Lake Manyara with its thousands of flamingoes and west of the massive Tarangire National Park. It is located on a 20 000-hectare wildlife ‘concession’ and exudes the true wilderness experience. This is the land of the ancient Maasai warriors, the land of zebra, giraffe, elephant… it’s the country of gnarled, ancient baobab trees. Chem Chem Lodge provides the best place to enjoy the natural wonders, relax around the campfire or take an early evening drink on the lake shores as the sun sets.
Chem Chem brings a quietly luxurious feel to the landscapes between Tarangire and Lake Manyara. Set within a private 40km2 concession, the lodge stands apart for its calm atmosphere and polished sense of style. This is a place where the safari slows down, encouraging you to savour the setting as much as the wildlife that moves through it.
The suites are spacious canvas rooms designed with comfort in mind – high ceilings, soft furnishings and wide verandas that open towards the plains. Inside, the look blends contemporary African design with classic safari influences, creating spaces that feel relaxed yet carefully considered. Around the main lodge, generous lounges, a swimming pool and shaded dining areas offer inviting places to pause between activities.
You might set out early into Tarangire for wildlife viewing, return for a long lunch, then wander out on foot across the concession in the cooler afternoon light. Elephants often pass through the surrounding landscape, and the open views mean wildlife can appear close to camp.
Chem Chem works best if you value atmosphere, thoughtful guiding and refined comfort alongside your safari experiences.
Our view
Chem Chem is a peaceful, laid-back and decidedly stylish lodge, with very friendly service and great food. It’s not a lodge for hardcore safari enthusiasts, who are likely to prefer somewhere inside Tarangire or Lake Manyara, or those looking for a budget offering. However, it is very well suited to those who want to relax and enjoy the lodge’s natural surroundings, and take advantage of the activities on the private concession.

Chem Chem Lodge is located on the eastern side of Lake Manyara. It is around 120km or less than a two-hour drive from Arusha Airport. Or you can fly with a domestic flight from the Arusha or Kilimanjaro airport to Kuros Airstrip, which is 66 kilometers or 1 hour 30 minutes away from Camp.
Guests can arrange the following activities:
- Game drives
- Walking with the Maasai tribesmen
- Sundowners on the Lake Manyara shore
A walk with the Maasai is a wonderful thing to do as you accompany these warriors through the bush and discover how they live with the wildlife – and how they have done so for centuries.
Guests will find Wi-fi in the main public areas and all suites. The connection speed is variable.
It is useful to arrive at Chem Chem Lodge with sufficient cash to pay for extra drinks and staff gratuities. Banknotes such as 5-dollar, 10-dollar, and 20-dollar bills are best. Poor network coverage in the parking area may mean the card machine is not always working. Most of the time, you can use US Dollars in Tanzania, particularly in tourist areas, and major credit cards are accepted at most hotels, lodges, and camps. However, we advise having some local currency on you if you want to purchase from a local shop. Major towns and airports have forex bureaus where you can exchange most major currencies such as US Dollars, British Pounds, Euros, etc.
A limited laundry service is available for guests who stay more than one night. Please hand it to us as soon as you arrive, as everything is air-dried, and we cannot guarantee it will be completely dry on its return, especially between June and September.
A ‘tipping box’ is available if you want to give a gratuity and any tips received are then shared amongst the lodge staff. We ask you not to tip staff individually unless there has been exceptional service. We advise that you make your contribution at the time of your check-out.
Guests can use the pool, and there are also yoga mats available. There is also a fitness center.
The rooms feature indoor & outdoor showers, fans, mosquito nets, a safe, a hairdryer, and a telephone.
